The Card and Registration Fee £9.95 will be deducted from the amount you first Load into your eAccount. This fee covers the cost of manufacture and despatch of your Sainsbury Prepaid Card, along with the administrative cost of setting up your eAccount. Anything remaining in your eAccount, after the Card and Registration Fee has been deducted (along with the Load Fee), forms your balance.

What information do I need to register with Sainsbury Prepaid MasterCard?

You will need to provide Sainsbury's with:

  • Your name
  • A valid email address
  • Your home address
  • Your birth date

This information enables them to verify your identity and protect the security of your eAccount. They will also ask you to create a password for your eAccount and choose two security questions for use in its management.

Email is the primary form of communication Sainsbury's have with you, so it's important that they verify your email address as being accurate and belonging to you.

If you have lived at your current address for less than three years, Sainsbury's may contact you to ask for additional identification, such as a Council Tax document or a utility bill.

Can I use my card to make purchases using PayPal?

Yes, however please note that when registering your card on PayPal, a 'pre-authorisation' is carried out to ensure your card is valid. In this case, a pre-authorisation means blocking a small amount of money on your card (usually less than £2) to check that there is available balance. The pre-authorisation expires after 15 days and is never collected from the card. Therefore, in order to register your card on PayPal, please ensure you have a minimum of £2 on your card.

How do I shop online?

You can shop on any website that accepts MasterCard – and because your Sainsbury's Card isn't linked to your bank account, the risks of online fraud are significantly reduced.

Once you've chosen your purchases and moved to the checkout or shopping basket, you'll be offered a list of payment methods – select the MasterCard option.

You'll then be asked to enter certain details from your Sainsbury's Card including:

  • The name on the card
  • The 16-digit card number
  • The expiry date
  • The CVC2 (or security) number

Once you've done this and confirmed your payment, it will be processed and you'll receive a confirmation that your payment has been accepted.

See Sainsbury's Prepaid Card website for more information about the elements that make up your Sainsbury's Card or to apply online.
